Chilean company begins construction of one of its largest battery storage projects

Energy company Generadora Metropolitana—owned by Chilean developer AME and France’s EDF—starts building Dune Plus, a large-scale energy storage and solar PV complex that will strengthen grid reliability in northern Chile.

Generadora Metropolitana, an energy generation company jointly owned by AME (a leading Chilean energy developer) and EDF Power Solutions Chile (the local subsidiary of France’s Électricité de France), has officially started construction of Dune Plus. The initiative is set to become one of the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) developments in Chile. The project is located in María Elena, in the Antofagasta Region—an area that concentrates much of the country’s solar and mining activity.

Dune Plus combines two major components:

  • Dune BESS: a 333 MW / 1,334 MWh battery energy storage system with four hours of storage capacity.

  • La Pampina Solar + Storage: a 186 MWp solar PV plant paired with a 175 MW / 702 MWh BESS, also with four hours of duration.

Together, the initiative will deploy 406 battery containers, more than 297,000 solar panels and over 150 transformers, across an area of 186 hectares—representing one of the most ambitious integrated renewable energy + storage projects in the country.

International Project Finance Structure

Dune Plus secured non-recourse project finance, backed by major international banks including:

  • BNP Paribas Securities Corp.

  • Crédit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank

  • MUFG Bank

  • Société Générale

  • Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation

Additionally, Banco de Crédito e Inversiones (BCI) provided a VAT credit facility. This financing structure underscores global investor confidence in Chile’s renewable energy and energy storage markets.

Diego Hollweck, CEO of Generadora Metropolitana, highlighted the project’s strategic importance:
“Dune Plus reinforces our commitment to decarbonization, delivering clean energy and strengthening system reliability. This milestone marks a new stage in our growth and leadership in Chile’s energy transition.”

Long-Term Supply Contract with Codelco

The energy generated and stored at Dune Plus will support a 15-year, 1,000 GWh power supply contract with Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer and Chile’s state-owned mining company. All energy will be injected into Chile’s National Electric System, improving grid stability and enabling renewable energy integration at scale.

Cesar Norton, President of AME, emphasized that the project showcases how Chile can lead global renewable integration:
“Dune Plus is proof of Chile’s ability to execute complex, innovative projects that enhance energy security and competitiveness.”

Joan Leal, CEO of EDF Power Solutions Chile, added that the initiative reflects EDF’s industrial expertise and its commitment to supporting strategic clients like Codelco in their decarbonization strategies.

Component Capacity Duration Description
Total project storage 509 MW / 2,036 MWh 4 hours Combined Dune + La Pampina systems
