Enery secures $298 million project financing for CEE, begins construction of 1 GWh BESS in Romania

Earlier this month, Enery announced the start of construction of more than 1 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Romania, which will be co-located with 761 MW of solar PV. More recently, the company secured financing to build out its BESS portfolio in Slovenia, Slovakia, Czechia, and Bulgaria.

Independent power producer (IPP) Enery has secured more than €250 million (USD$298 million) in long-term portfolio project financing which it plans to invest into building out its BESS portfolio in Czechia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and Slovenia.

Headquartered in Vienna, Austria, Enery already has a BESS portfolio in Central Eastern Europe (CEE), and this latest financing has a period of 22 years. Czech firm Československá obchodní banka, a. s. (ČSOB) acted as the sole lender, with United Bulgarian Bank AD and Československá obchodná banka, a.s. Slovakia acting as guarantors.

“Securing more than €250 million through this long-term portfolio financing is another strong endorsement of our strategy and execution capabilities,” said Enery’s CEO, Richard König, and COO, Lukas Nemec.

They added that the financing enables Enery to fast track the delivery of 100 MW / 220 MWh of BESS capacity co-located with 300 MW of solar PV across four energy markets.

“By combining renewable generation with flexibility solutions, we are helping strengthen energy security, support grid stability, and deliver reliable green electricity for the long term, making the energy transition real and impactful for customers and communities across the CEE region,” the Enery executives said.

Earlier this month, on January 15, the IPP announced the start of construction of a hybrid PV and BESS project in Romania. The Ogrezeni facility will combine more than 1 GWh of BESS with 761 MWp / 534 MW AC of solar, making it one of the largest hybrid projects in Europe. Enery is expecting it to be energized by the end of 2027.

“Ogrezeni is a flagship project for Romania – not only because of its scale, but because of the way it has been designed around local value creation,” said Liviu Gavrila, Country Manager Romania at Enery. “From local engineering and construction companies to long-term service providers, Romanian partners will play a central role throughout the life of the project. The energy produced here will support the country’s decarbonization efforts while directing tax revenues and economic benefits back into the surrounding communities.”

The project is supported by a €460 million project finance loan agreement signed in December 2025 with a syndicate of eight commercial banks.

Local company Enevo Group has been named the main engineering, procurement and construction contactor for both the PV project and the grid connection

In December 2025, Enery secured financing for a 150 MW/ 600 MWh BESS in Nova Zagora, Bulgaria. The financing package came from DSK Bank AD and it will enable the construction and operation of the standalone BESS scheduled for commissioning in March 2026.

Enery’s total current renewables portfolio spans 566 MW of installed capacity, generating approximately 766 GWh of electricity. It is currently developing almost 10 GW of projects across 10 CEE countries and is highly active in the region’s power purchase agreement sector.
