EPC Contract Signed for 33 MW Solar Plant
The EPC contract for the 33 MW Ilute Solar Plant in Zambia has been formally signed, paving the way for construction to begin in October 2025. The contract has been awarded to China Energy Engineering Group International Company together with the Northwest Electric Power Design Institute.
Located west of Sesheke, a border town in southern Zambia, the project will involve the construction of a solar power plant, new transmission lines, and upgrades to existing substations. The EPC scope covers detailed engineering design, equipment procurement, installation and commissioning, trial operations, and maintenance.
The Ilute Solar Plant is notable as Zambia’s first renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP) initiative involving an independent power purchaser, creating a model that could be replicated across Africa. It is also the first renewable EPC project delivered in Zambia by China Energy Engineering, a milestone the company says establishes a foundation for further expansion in both Zambia and the wider African market.
Once completed, the Ilute Solar Project is expected to contribute to Zambia’s ongoing efforts to diversify its power mix, reduce reliance on hydropower, and strengthen grid reliability in underserved areas.
