This was communicated during a high-level meeting between Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held in Beijing, China.

The promise was made at a time when the Kenyan opposition has routinely accused President William Ruto of dalliance with the West. 

During the meeting, Wang Yi further promised to help Kenya in its development agenda as well as deepening political mutual trust between the two nations.

While the current administration has appeared to lean more towards the West, Wang Yi reminded Musalia that Kenya and China have shared a strong diplomatic relationship for over two decades.

“The two countries have become good friends who trust each other and good partners seeking win-win cooperation,” Wang Yi stated as quoted by the Chinese publication Xinhua.

“China stands ready to consolidate political mutual trust with Kenya, deepen comprehensive cooperation, and bring China-Kenya relations to a new level.”

The Prime Cabinet Secretary who also serves as Foreign Minister agreed with Wang Yi’s remarks adding that Kenya had benefitted immensely from the friendship with China. 

“The joint construction of the Belt and Road has provided strong support for Kenya’s national construction and economic development,” Musalia highlighted.

Mudavadi who visited Beijing three months after Ruto made a similar visit remarked that Kenya was looking forward to learning from China’s development concepts and enhancing the exchange of experience.

“The two sides need to strengthen communication and collaboration in multilateral settings to practice true multilateralism and safeguard the common interests of developing countries,” Xi stated then.

Kenya is expecting to borrow Ksh163 billion from China by June 2024 to spur stalled infrastructure projects.
